Except for the explanatory introduction, there are no words in this book; just amazing pictures which awaken wonder and imagination in children and adults alike. The faces of the people and animals he creates are so expressive they seem almost alive. Mr. Freyman makes it clear in the introduction that he has the greatest respect for food, and nothing is wasted. His intention is to enhance food’s appeal. And looking at this book may just make your children better eaters! From the introduction: "On a more practical note, children who are chronically poor eaters can see food in a new light. They can be amused and entertained by food, making the eating more attractive, more meaningful, and even more fun." And at the end of the book, he tells you how to make each of his designs! Isn’t that nice?
I can vouch for the effect of this book on children. Mine have been inspired to make fun foods – then eat them – in the years since this book was given to us as a gift. It has been loved to death, losing both the front and back covers, but it never has lost its "a-peel" (sorry! Couldn’t resist!).
This is not Mr. Freyman’s only food book. He even has one on shapes, colors and numbers for little ones. I highly recommend this and the other books in this series. They will be treasured in your home, and would make wonderful gifts. Bon appetit!
